I have been taking PPI's for around nine years for acid relflux and Hiatal
Hernia. Initially when taking Losec I found that my big toe joints were
becoming stiff and painful. Later when switched to Zoton it worsened. Since
2004 I have been taking Nexium which has controlled my acidity much better
and at first the the pain, stiffness in my toes improved. However in the
past year all of my toes have become stiff and painful.
I have read several times on web sites of people who say that their
arthritis has worsened when starting Nexium. Has anyone here found similar
effects.

Arthralgia is a lesser known side-effect of PPIs. I suggest that you look up
the side-effects and drug interactions of all your medication here:
www.drugs.com and www.rxlist.com

I did not have joint pain with Nexium (20-80 mg - just felt poisoned at the
higher doses), but with Protonix at 40 mg I developed severe arthralgia and
myalgia. I am on Omeprazole 20 mg and have experienced no side-effects to
speak of.

Big toe pain may alternatively indicate gout.
http://arthritis.about.com/od/gout/ht/treatgout.htm This is influenced by
diet: http://arthritis.about.com/cs/gout/a/foodstoavoid.htm There appears to
be link between high fructose intake (ready meals and desserts, some syrups,
honey, sodas, colas, sweets, etc.) and gout
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/7219473.stm

I had gout last year as a side-effect of chemotherapie.

Thank you, the problem is always that doctors tend to reject patients
comments about side effects.

It is not gout and none of the high fructose items feature in my diet.

Yes, as it is a rare side-effect. I had to find the small print and take it
in to my doctor before she
believed me.

Switching to another PPI might help you depending on how much
you need to take.

The class PPI meds have similar side effects so this may not help.
